Google Bad Review 1: I decided to choose F Smith & Son due to the strong reviews found on Google, but sadly my experience was far from positive – in all, over 70 items were damaged in the move, including an intricate model of a ship that was handmade by my grandfather. The workmanship has been described by others as ‘museum standard' and the piece is of huge sentimental value to me. When booking the move it was singled out as something that needed special attention, and they promised they would take good care of it. Another company had previously transported it, without harm, from Devon to London, so I thought I could trust F Smith & Son to move it 20 minutes down the road. Heartbreakingly, they managed to break the ship in three different places, resulting in two of the masts snapping off.
Beyond this, they managed to damage several pieces of my bigger furniture. For instance, a bookcase received a hole in the back, which was taped over and not mentioned to me, and a handle was snapped off an expensive oak sideboard (though one of the team did later come round and fix this for me).
In terms of smaller items, I have a collection of DVDs/Blurays, books and CDs. Originally I was planning to pack these myself, but after worrying that I may not be packing them well enough, I decided to give up and let the professionals do it – which proved to be a mistake. The items were placed in boxes in an often haphazard manner, and as a result many of them received nicks, tears, bends or scratches. This isn't the type of damage that will bother everyone, but if you're a collector and you prize the condition of your items, I certainly wouldn't recommend their packing service, given how many of my items were damaged (the company also gave no inventory of packed goods, not even an overall box count).
Given the combination of their good reviews and the fact that they were the most expensive of the five quotes I received (they were over a thousand pounds more expensive than the cheapest one), I was very disappointed – heartbroken, even – by the condition that my items reached my new property in, and it dampened the whole joy of moving house for me.
I don't usually like to leave negative reviews (all my other Google reviews are five stars), so the fact I'm even writing this speaks volumes about the experience I had with F Smith & Son. In short, they damaged my furniture, devalued and sullied my collection, and broke a precious family heirloom, which will never be quite the same again, even after repair.

Google Bad Review (2): Smiths relied on me “the client” to send pics of items to be moved, not being a estimator i underestimated the amount to be moved but luckily got a bigger van or my move would not have happened!!! from a 450 cu ft to a 800 cu ft(moving from a 3 storey 4 bed house), then a old white battered van turned up with only “2” guys to move everything!… TWO blokes to empty a 3 storey house and then unload…I helped the guys who were great and very hard working to load and unload otherwise they would have been knackered at the end of it. I feel their should have been at least 3 guys there, (my daughter moved a smaller load from the house and had 4 blokes turn up,) ….my advice is get a firm that will charge you for the size of van you require and not for every item that goes into it!!! i had to pay an extra £185.00 plus vat for 3 ikea bits of furniture to be loaded on the van even though there was plenty of room for them….Apparently its not JUST the size of the van you hire but every item that goes into it as its calculated as square footage, …Next time Hire a friendly mover who will simply charge you for the size of the van you require and assume your going to fill it, & then turn up with 4 blokes to load and unload….
