Google Bad Review (2): Please be warned about the cost of the trips booked with Cuba Direct!
My husband and I travelled in Cuba in September 2015 for 14 days. We travelled with the itinerary booked through Cuba Direct by the agent named York Ortiz and had a mixed experience.
Please be warned about the agency fee you will incur booking with Cuba Direct.
We have calculated, the real cost of the trip at around £1,150:
– Car hire – 10 Days – £500
– 11 night stay in Casas – £160
– 3 nights stay in Bleau Varadero (3 x 2 x $85) – £350
– Private transfer Havana Airport – Havana – £20
– Varadero – Airport Bus transfer – 2 x £20 = £40
– Visas – (2 x $35) – £50
York has charged us £2,370 – what is more than 100% mark up!
Comments on the trip:
1. Upon arriving to Playa Larga, we found that there were actually only a
few nice casas with the sea view. We were not booked into any of them. The accommodation Cuba Direct booked us in was extremely disappointing, the room looked more like a garage than a place to stay.
2. Upon arriving to Trinidad, we were very surprised to be booked to casa located in a slum area in the suburbs. We didn't have any other choice but to look for alternatives. With little trouble we found a beautiful room in a colonial casa right off the central square in the historic town centre. It turned out that there was quite a lot of capacity available in the city so there was no reason to be booked in a casa in a slum in the outskirts. The only reasonable explanation of accommodation choices in Playa Larga and Trinidad was that the agent wanted to help his friends or relatives with occupancy during off peak season.
3. Upon arriving to Bleau Varadero, we found out that we have been booked
into the cheapest room with a not very nice view. We have wasted one day
trying to rebook ourselves to the nicer room. York did not give us an
option from the beginning to be booked to the better accommodation; the
difference was CUC12 per person per night.
We have questioned the situation upon arrival back to London with Cuba Direct and York hasn’t even bothered to reply to us and answer the questions we had. However we have received a respond from Cuba Direct supervisor Martin Payne, who answered to the query as “question the price with the sales team”.
