Google Bad Review (2):  God, I would give -5 stars if I could. I never leave bad reviews but this is too much. On 22 October 2021 at 12.00pm, my friend and I went to C&R Cafe Restaurant in Chinatown, London. By the time I tried to pay for my portion around 1.00pm, the female member of staff serving us rudely and almost loudly insisted that their minimum card payment is £10, despite mine being only £9.50 — unless I pay the £9.50 in cash.

She did not even offer to pay me back the 50p in difference, and did not appear apologetic about scamming me at all, despite slightly raising her voice at me in front of everyone.
Not only that, after she saw the £9.50 on the bill and the debit card in my hand, she became a bit hostile towards me.

You might think 50p isn't much but if someone owed you £100 and they insist to only pay you back £90, with no proper explanation whatsoever, you'd be mad too, wouldn't you? I've worked in the F&B industry before and if the change, say, was 85 cents and the till ran out of 5 cents, we have to give back 90 cents in change to the customer — no less.

I tried to request for a receipt, but she immediately turned away and pretended she was busy then headed elsewhere. This is not only humiliating but also clearly a violation to my rights as a consumer. I did thought of asking another member of staff but I just wanted to get out of there — I also believe this is a family-run establishment so I think it wouldn't make a difference even if I tried.

From my understanding, Visa's Core Rules and Mastercard Rules have made it clear that it is illegal to establish a minimum or maximum transaction amount.

It is absolutely ridiculous to set minimum transaction amounts in this day and age, and especially with the COVID climate. I have since contacted Trading Standards.

An exact similar situation happened to another customer before me — see the picture attached.

Also, the food is not bad but it isn't great either. I wouldn't call it underseasoned but it's something like what a first year undergrad with minimal cooking experience would make. Malaysian food requires a lot of ingredients and since students are on a tight budget, they'd omit some. It's not bad if you're an undergrad but a bit of a letdown from a restaurant that has been here for over two decades.

Even before this blatant disrespect, C & R genuinely was never at the top of my head if someone asked me for Malaysian food recommendations. C&R is definitely good value and the food is okay, I don't deny that at all. But if you want the good stuff, do head west to the Paddington/Bayswater area or Rasa Sayang that's also in Chinatown. Food is packed with flavour and aromatics and the folk are simply the loveliest xx
