Google Bad Review: This is a beautifully designed hotel, and exceptionally clean. If these were the only two factors important my stay, it would have been better. A previous stay in August was much better than this experience.
This is my review, and therefore features my experience which is likely to be different for everyone. I am entitled to an opinion, as much as staff here would like to indicate otherwise. What matters to me is the interactions.
My feedback is about how I was made to feel during the stay. This year being the year it has, the expectations of having a relaxing stay and not being humiliated or undermined become more important that ever.
Arranging childcare and the looming further COVID-19 restrictions means it is difficult for me to arrange a stay far in advance. The night before booking the stay all room types were available on the website. On the morning of the stay, only two room types were remaining. My husband decided to proceed. He rang front desk after he booked and was told no other rooms were available. It would be useful to know why.
Check in was a painful experience, with staff making it clear that there were more important guests to attend to. I know now this was the case, due to the to event in the Provisions restaurant. But for us, these interactions, set the tone for the rest of the stay. And making accusatory comments about what I was requesting did not help.
We tried to arrange a booking for the restaurant for dinner, and were told that this would not be possible.
We were placed in a room on the second floor. The room was smaller, with a view onto the street, and not as well appointed as that which we stayed in on the sixth floor, and it was a real shame we could not PAY to upgrade to the room we had previously stayed in. We left quickly and had dinner elsewhere.
When we went for breakfast, we were told our room was not on the list and perhaps not included. We left at 8:30am the next morning, far earlier than we had hoped to.
I should not have to be shamed to ask about the Bonvoy rewards programme, and what's possible and what is not.
Unfortunately, despite efficiency, there appears to be a culture of denial of any negative feedback that does not fit in with what the General Manager and staff want to hear. I have tried to raise feedback, and have been astounded to have a story being spun into ‘you were not entitled to a suite'. At no point was this my request, and this is what is being responded to. I noticed my husband was spoken to with more courtesy when he rang to give the same feedback, which begs a question about treatment of different people.
It begs the question why feedback is so hard for this property to hear. And given the general manager has decided for himself that responding defensively to my reviews is best, I will use this space to ask ponder would have made this stay better. An explanation of the way the hotel is being run to make it viable in the current circumstances so that only certain rooms are available and need to be booked in advance, a meaningful apology where I was heard but told clearly why Bonvoy status was not helpful on this occasion, an admission that the event run in the restaurant is more crucial than general customers and a less defensive response overall. And thank you!
