Google Bad Review (2):  God, I would give -5 stars if I could. I never leave bad reviews but this is too much. On 22 October 2021 at 12.00pm, my friend and I went to C&R Cafe Restaurant in Chinatown, London. By the time I tried to pay for my portion around 1.00pm, the female member of staff serving us rudely and almost loudly insisted that their minimum card payment is £10, despite mine being only £9.50 — unless I pay the £9.50 in cash.

She did not even offer to pay me back the 50p in difference, and did not appear apologetic about scamming me at all, despite slightly raising her voice at me in front of everyone.
Not only that, after she saw the £9.50 on the bill and the debit card in my hand, she became a bit hostile towards me.

You might think 50p isn't much but if someone owed you £100 and they insist to only pay you back £90, with no proper explanation whatsoever, you'd be mad too, wouldn't you? I've worked in the F&B industry before and if the change, say, was 85 cents and the till ran out of 5 cents, we have to give back 90 cents in change to the customer — no less.

I tried to request for a receipt, but she immediately turned away and pretended she was busy then headed elsewhere. This is not only humiliating but also clearly a violation to my rights as a consumer. I did thought of asking another member of staff but I just wanted to get out of there — I also believe this is a family-run establishment so I think it wouldn't make a difference even if I tried.

From my understanding, Visa's Core Rules and Mastercard Rules have made it clear that it is illegal to establish a minimum or maximum transaction amount.

It is absolutely ridiculous to set minimum transaction amounts in this day and age, and especially with the COVID climate. I have since contacted Trading Standards.

An exact similar situation happened to another customer before me — see the picture attached.

Also, the food is not bad but it isn't great either. I wouldn't call it underseasoned but it's something like what a first year undergrad with minimal cooking experience would make. Malaysian food requires a lot of ingredients and since students are on a tight budget, they'd omit some. It's not bad if you're an undergrad but a bit of a letdown from a restaurant that has been here for over two decades.

Even before this blatant disrespect, C & R genuinely was never at the top of my head if someone asked me for Malaysian food recommendations. C&R is definitely good value and the food is okay, I don't deny that at all. But if you want the good stuff, do head west to the Paddington/Bayswater area or Rasa Sayang that's also in Chinatown. Food is packed with flavour and aromatics and the folk are simply the loveliest xx

You're paying for the location, not the food. We arrived and the staff weren't sure if they had a table for us so we were told they didn't, then did, then they asked if we would sit outside (which we didn't want) then as we left we were told there was a table, only to be told they weren't sure if we could sit there or not. We were finally told we could – my partner asked if we'd be rushed out and if they were sure we could sit and eat and they said yes.

We ordered, they asked if we wanted everything together, we said yes. It felt like we were being rushed and this was confirmed as our food came out at completely different times despite them asking if we wanted it together. My food came first and my partner was left waiting for his.

The size chicken curry was a joke, initially it seemed reasonable until it came to eating. There was one piece of HALF a flabby-skinned bone-in chicken leg. It looked like there were two pieces of chicken but no – it was just a bone. There were 3 small new potatoes in it. The beef hor fun arrived in comparison, an enormous portion. It was bland, with the exception of being salty and very greasy. It had the exact flavour of noodles and beansprouts from the local chippy, my partner left half of this. The wonton soup was again, bland, the chicken satay was fresh and that was the best thing about the meal. The roti was fine but have had better elsewhere.

The meal came to £40. Better going to any number of Singaporean/Malaysian places in London.

Google Bad Review 1:  Like the sirens of ancient Greece, don't be allured to eat in this chain by the appealing physical qualities.
The food is bland, which is the exact opposite of the native cuisine.
If you absolutely have no choice, order the sweet corn cakes, they are good everywhere.

Google Bad Review (2):  There's a few things to remember before eating here:
-food is tasty
-portions are very small
-it's expensive
-they don't take cash
-they want you to pay via scanning QR code on your phone
-they look at you suspiciously if you tell them your phone doesn't scan QR (the waitress looked rudely at us and told us that all phones scan QR codes nowadays) so be careful if you don't have a smartphone
-they don't take cash and you have to politely ask them to pay by card, which they don't like either. Essentially they're one step ahead towards a cashless society, which makes this place unworthy of my time and money.
-overall a bad experience, 0 respect towards customers who PAY to eat here.
-I don't recommend this place, there's tons of way better options out there.

Google Bad Review 1:  the food was cold, the egg fried rice was hard and tasted like school food. the people next to me were also complaining about how bad the food was, with a mother shouting at her kids for bringing her here due to the horridness of the food. the price would be fine if the food was actually good, but £17.50 for horrendous food that was inedible? what a joke. the desserts were hard and the ice cream tasted stale. we complained to the manager and they were unprofessional saying “there’s nothing i could do” and saying that they dont do refunds but then started to go on about how “oh we have a 10-15 minute window to sort out problems” so they couldn’t help us out because we had been there for twenty minutes, even though surely there would he nothing they could do in their 10-15 minute window if they don’t offer refunds? anyways.. just don’t go here.. also saw a review that was quite recent of someone saying they were served raw chicken.

Google Bad Review (2):  After visiting this Aroma restaurant in First Floor, West 12 Shopping Centre, Shepherd’s Bush Green, Shepherd's Bush, London W12 8PP for 10 years as a loyal customer almost twice per week. And recommending friends and family. It turns out to be a disappointment. I went with my relative and paid to eat in. I have paid for two drink and went back to get the second. When the manager started to accuse me of not paying for my order. When I asked him to check the receipt, he crush it and throw it in the bin. After asking him for a couple of minutes to recheck the receipt and give my order. He continue aggressive and tried to bully me to pay for another drink. During, this time drawing attention to himself and the customers and eventually went back to check the receipt and see two drink that had been order. The manager was very rude. Please beware customers, been a loyal customer doesn't prevent sellers of service form taking advantage of you. This is a perfect example.
