Google Bad Review 1:  I am writing this review to express my dismay regarding the booking my husband citizen of Ukraine made in your hotel 2 years ago. Due to the pandemic we were not allowed to visit the UK, so we had to postpone our trip for uncertain time. Finally after being vaccinated (3 times) we had decided to set off. I had applied for a visa in advance for six months but the war began. In current circumstances and international turmoil my application was suspended until indefinite time. We realized that we couldn’t get visa on time, so we informed the hotel immediately and asked to changed the date of our visit but our request was rejected. That’s outrageous how could you while the entire world is staying with Ukraine. You have taken my husband’s money without finding an appropriate solution. I hope you will take this unpleasant situation into consideration and it will never happen again to other Ukrainians and citizens from any other countries.

Google Bad Review (2):  Robbed by this hotel unjustly, violation of privacy, worst experience you could imagine.

My partner and I booked New Road Hotel from the 16th – 19th of April 2021.

On Saturday evening, the 17th, a friend of ours and his partner booked a room in the hotel also. Since I had discounts on my account, I let them book their room using my Booking.com account. However, they registered under their own names and paid with their own credit cards.

On the morning of Sunday 18th we were woken up at 9am by a hotel employee called Anna Guadagno, an ill-mannered staff member, who barged into our room while we were sleeping – completely violating our privacy. She was extremely rude and demanded we come downstairs immediately to discuss something about a “black” man.

Feeling groggy, confused and violated, we changed and went downstairs to see what she could be talking about.

According to her story a “black” man who wasn’t a guest in the hotel had been let lit into the hotel by my friends and had subsequently lit a wet wipe on fire.

This action did not result in any actual fire or any actual damage but none the less at about 7am, while we were asleep, Anna tried to take £500 from my debit card.

Fortunately, my bank declined the £500 but a few minutes she tried again with lower and lower amounts until eventually she managed to get £150.

What had actually happened was that our friends had accidentally let into the hotel a “black” man who wasn’t a guest and that event had been recorded on CCTV.

That was pretty much it.

The kind of innocent mistake that happens daily in hotels around the world. And in this case it was a doubly innocent mistake because the same “black” man had been in the hotel earlier – had been seen by our friends – and that’s therefore why they thought nothing of it when he followed them in.

We respectfully explained that we had no clue about any of this and in fact we were asleep at the time it happened. We explained that we do not know who this person is, cannot be held responsible for the mistakes of third parties, and found it frankly astonishing that we were being treated like criminals and evicted from the hotel.

This was early on Sunday morning remember and we were not supposed to leave till Monday.

Anna refused to listen to us, spoke to us with extreme contempt and was adamant that we had done something wrong and that therefore we had to leave now. Furthermore she said she not refund us the room charge for that night even though we would not now be staying there.

Let me just recap here, we were evicted from the hotel solely because of the innocent mistake of a friend who had booked using my Booking.com account. For that we were evicted 36 hours before we were due to leave, not refunded for the room night we had paid for but now couldn’t use, and charged £500 for god knows what reason.

This is astonishingly unjust and for want of a better word – theft.

The fact that most of the reviews for this hotel are good, leads me to believe that the problem we encountered is not systemic but the result of one bad individual, Anna Guadagno. I have never been treated so rudely by somebody in the hospitality industry in my life and I’ve never had a hotel try to take money from my account under false pretexts before either.

This is somebody who needs to be removed from her role immediately before she causes more damage, either to the hotels guests, or to the hotels reputation.

Google Good Review:  Small and cozy room. The bathroom door was not closing. Nevertheless, it was a great experience! Food was absolutely perfect. Not a fan of the yoga theme though. Playroom was a plus.
