Google Bad Review 1: Lovely building and our Luxury King room was very nice, but seriously let down by awful food and protracted plumbing issues. The food is well presented but badly – and dangerously – executed and really poor value for money:
I took my partner away for a romantic weekend just before Christmas, paying through Secret Escapes for bed, breakfast & evening meals (which in reality is £35 per head, which doesn’t go far at this hotel’s prices).
On our first night…
A steak that was pricey yet so tough it couldn’t be cut! Sent back to the kitchen, another was cooked but that was little better. Whether the meat or the preparation/lack of nappé/lack of resting, they were inedible.
A £29 venison dish which consisted of 6 1″x1″x0.5″ squares of at-best luke warm meat and a cottage pie in the smallest and shallowest ramikin I’ve ever seen. Not impressed! It all looked pretty but the execution and value for money was really poor.
On the morning of our second day the hotel suffered a power cut which tripped their water pump: My partner was in the shower with a head full of shampoo when the water went off. With little information from the hotel, after over an hour I was able to get the key to a room on a lower floor which still had water pressure and allowed us to get showered. Traipsing through the hotel in dressing gowns in order to do so was a bit embarrassing though. Not directly the hotel’s fault, perhaps, but water throughout the main hotel building wasn’t restored for another 7 hours, during which we weren’t kept updated. We very nearly left the hotel because of it.
Worst of all, on our second night back in the restaurant, my partner was served up a quails scotch egg in which the minced pork was raw!! Unsafe and another meal ruined.
My £12 starter consisted of 2 of the smallest scallops ever seen, about half an inch high: I suspect it was 1 scallop cut across to make two shallow little things. Again, well below expectations.
For a 4 star hotel which prides itself on its double AA rosette restaurant, it’s dire. Serving raw minced pork is a threat to health and the other food issues really reflect badly upon this place.
The staff were polite, but I shouldn’t have had to complain on 4 occasions or fight to get money off.

Google Bad Review (2): Clueless staff and arrogant management detracts from this beautiful location. They don’t even seem to have a handle on basic hotel functions or any control over heating but are slaves to procedures that just aren’t adequate. Avoid.
