Google Bad Review (2): As something well known, it's advised by those in the ‘know' that taking records to a record shop to sell is a ‘bad move'. Record shops in general will low-ball you as much as they can to meet a healthy profit margin.
Unfortunately, David's bookshop took this to another level.
I have a storage container full of vinyl records, many of which are duplicates of which I've collected over the years. With most, many do not fall below the grade of VG+ and many are EX. First presses are what I aim for and with a huge variety of Davy Grahams, John Martyns, Nick Drakes and a huge selection of Psychedelia, I have accumulated a large number.
I took it upon myself to take in a select few records and trying to see what a good, quick sale would bring me – I included a couple of gems and a few to provide as a ‘buffer'.
Davy Graham – Midnight Man. Unboxed Decca – EX. John Renbourn, First Press (Transatlantic) signed (extremely rare) by the late man himself. With this were a couple of Fairport Conventions (Pink Islands) – Full House, Leige and Leif and Unhalfbricking, Blind Faith, Fotherigay (Pink Island), Sandy and Johnny and whatever else.
It was to my amusement a gentlemen came back to me and offered the grand old sum of… Wait for it!…
£100!
Midnight Man on it's own fetches a minimum of £150 and right up in to the mid (to late) £200's! I know this because last Friday in Exeter I sold one for £190. It's a rare record! With the Folk genre, I have dedicated years to hunting them down and collecting them to my best ability.
As for Renbourn and signed – that was clearly disregarded. The man hardly signed records and with his close work with the likes of Bert Jansch, Davy Graham and of course the Pentangle, he is highly collectable. Davy Grahams fly off shelves also – Especially first presses – people pay their dimes for these.
I am expecting a response as I expect this shop can't take criticism very well… But it is what it is. I know my market and I know vinyl very well to understand when people are trying to rob you
To offer £100 is more of a bold insult than an offer and to retain some respect, he would have been better off refusing them.
Two other shops weren't great but no where as insulting as this joke of a shop. One offer at £170 and the other at £195.
Regardless, Midnight has now sold to one of the three private offers that I had for £180.
It was a fine reminder and test for my own amusement on how wicked and vile these shops are.
In store the vinyl are mostly reissues and those that are not seem to be overpriced. I saw a Sandy Denny sleeve of which looked in VG- (God only knows what the condition the media was in) going for £50! Just think, in David's – two of those are worth all of the above mentioned.
I wouldn't recommend as clearly the vinyl side of which deals with first presses and ‘Used/Second Hand Vinyl (as they put it) are either extremely naive or complete and utter crooks.
David's gives record dealers an extremely TERRIBLE name.
