Google Bad Review (2): What a let down. Was taken here for lunch by a well-meaning friend as a birthday treat to cheer me up on a wet cold day in January. I had high hopes having never been to The Ned before, but had been to Cecconi’s in Piccadilly.

I used to review restaurants professionally so am lucky to have eaten in some good places.
This is not one of them…

At 12.30pm I was astonished that I had to queue for a full 5 minutes just to be allowed in to join my friend at his table! Not a good start…Definitely not the place to come for an express business lunch! Yet no st diners here were City boys.

We ordered the eye-watering £18 “Sharing Platter” of salamis and greasy speck, that looked like it had all been plonked on the plate directly from a pre-packed £3 Tesco “antipasto” pack…

My poor friend had an unbelievably overpriced bowl of anaemic-looking plain cheese spaghetti to follow… (no salt, freshly ground pepper or Parmesan was offered to pep it up).
Not wanting to make a fuss and ruin my birthday meal, he said nothing, but I could see he was gutted.

As for my £17 Salmon salad (£7 extra for the salmon which was microscopically dispersed in a tasteless mound of grains!!)…
What a bland and underwhelming experience…. I had to ask for a squeeze of lemon in a bid to give this tasteless fridge-cold dish any flavour!

This place is daylight robbery. HOW can Cecconi’s live with themselves for ripping people off so overtly??
The bill came to just under £100 and that didn’t even include a single glass of wine!
The one thing I’ll commend is the buzzy atmosphere of all the other restaurants packed into in this vast, beautiful Lutyens building.
I can at least recommend Cecconi’s coffee, which was strong and good – as you’d expect from an Italian establishment.

But I certainly won’t go back. Cecconi’s needs to stop riding on its reputation of yesteryear and seriously address its terrible and I mean terrible, brazenly overpriced yet bland dishes.

A horrible experience for anyone with tastebuds!
