Google Bad Review (2):  It might look a simplistic view, but after 5 years living in London I can easily recognise two categories of Italian restaurants: 1) restaurants with authentic Italian cuisine (not so many, unfortunately) and 2) pseudo-italian restaurants. I regret to say that Fumo fully belongs to the second category. Let me list a few reasons:

1) bread is a foundation of any Italian meals. Being served bread on your table is already a good way to categorise authentic vs pseudo Italian restaurants. It's a simple rule. If you have ever visited Italy, you know that bread is always the first thing waiters will put on your table. Well, there was no bread on our table and we were not asked by any of the waiters at any time.

2) ‘cicchetti' (Italian tapas) is not a typical Italian meal. While it has been (and still is) so trendy in London (why???), you should know that it's typical from the North East/Venice region ONLY. You won't eat cicchetti in Milan, Rome or Naples. So, proposing a 100% cicchetti-based menu in a Milanese restaurant is simply confusing. In addition, serving pasta cacio & pepe (from Rome) or Parmigiana (from Sicily) as cicchetti is more than confusing. But I understand that this might be a bit sophisticated for the casual user. Definitely not for an Italian.

3) parmigiana served by Fumo is so far from the authentic parmigiana. Same for arancini. I wonder why Fumo serves non-authentic Sicilian food when they promote themselves as a Milanese restaurant.

Yet, some plates were great. Pasta cacio and pepe, for instance. Also, service was high level and waiters always always ready to help.

But unfortunately this is NOT enough to consider Fumo an authentic Italian restaurant.

Google Bad Review (2):  It might look a simplistic view, but after 5 years living in London I can easily recognise two categories of Italian restaurants: 1) restaurants with authentic Italian cuisine (not so many, unfortunately) and 2) pseudo-italian restaurants. I regret to say that Fumo fully belongs to the second category. Let me list a few reasons:

1) bread is a foundation of any Italian meals. Being served bread on your table is already a good way to categorise authentic vs pseudo Italian restaurants. It's a simple rule. If you have ever visited Italy, you know that bread is always the first thing waiters will put on your table. Well, there was no bread on our table and we were not asked by any of the waiters at any time.

2) ‘cicchetti' (Italian tapas) is not a typical Italian meal. While it has been (and still is) so trendy in London (why???), you should know that it's typical from the North East/Venice region ONLY. You won't eat cicchetti in Milan, Rome or Naples. So, proposing a 100% cicchetti-based menu in a Milanese restaurant is simply confusing. In addition, serving pasta cacio & pepe (from Rome) or Parmigiana (from Sicily) as cicchetti is more than confusing. But I understand that this might be a bit sophisticated for the casual user. Definitely not for an Italian.

3) parmigiana served by Fumo is so far from the authentic parmigiana. Same for arancini. I wonder why Fumo serves non-authentic Sicilian food when they promote themselves as a Milanese restaurant.

Yet, some plates were great. Pasta cacio and pepe, for instance. Also, service was high level and waiters always always ready to help.

But unfortunately this is NOT enough to consider Fumo an authentic Italian restaurant.
