FB Last Post Text: “I'm an Asian Muslim woman in the startup world – it's like a tripling of discrimination.” Our Shifting the Lens series comes to an end this week and our final star is the prize-winning entrepreneur Selly Shafira. Selly grew up in a Muslim family in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and started her first business aged 18. Inspired by entering entrepreneurial competitions as an undergraduate, she travelled to the UK to complete a Master’s in Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Managem…ent at our Imperial College Business School. “It’s my dream come true to come to the UK to study. What I love the most is meeting people who are not just here to study but also to network.” Selly has faced discrimination in the past but found the multicultural community at Imperial supportive and welcoming. Despite facing challenges, she recently won the top prize in our WE Innovate programme, for her startup, which provides remote water quality management for small-scale fish farmers in Indonesia.
