Having studied in Ukraine and France, Ouédraogo brought what he'd learned back to the continent, and his mission to present his people with dignity and grace was rea…lised✨ Yaaba was the first of his films to receive widespread recognition, a tale of a young boy who befriends an old woman accused of witchcraft in their village. It won the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes in 1989 Ouédraogo’s next film, Tilaï, went on to win the Jury Grand Prize at Cannes the following year and is a depicts the tensions between rural and urban life in Burkina Faso through a tale of lawbreaking lovers Samba Traoré (1993) once again plays to Ouédraogo’s strengths and centres those outcast from society with generosity and won the Silver Bear Award at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival See more
