Google Bad Review 1: Digital Ventures is a BCG-purchased implementation group that has doubled in size over the last year. That growth caused dysfunction within the group and amplified dysfunction that already existed. Unclear career pathways, changing product offerings, low pay, limited leadership or learning opportunities, and mismanagement make DV a place to be wary of – even if you think having BCG on your resume is worth the risk. DV's promotions and bonuses differ from BCG. At DV, feedback is not quantitative. A “coach” who is assigned to you when you begin but likely has never worked with you and may not be in the same office as you are is responsible for “pitching” your value to a board who then determines your bonus and promotion chances. This process is opaque. For example, you may receive excellent feedback from colleagues, but your coach may not translate that well to the board resulting in a lack of promotion and lower than expected bonus. My coach recently told me, “no one at DV is responsible for your career development other than you.” Inspiring words from the only stakeholder able to support your growth at DV. Working alongside BCG (including BCG hours and travel) is becoming more commonplace at DV. DV can no longer command millions of dollars for three to four months of research before pitching startup concepts as their success rate for ventures is quite low ( roughly 5% succeed). DV has become an implementation arm for digital transformation projects BCG develops. This shift results in less innovative work, long hours, BGC-style work that is very slide focused, a lot of travel, or force-fitting the design process to supply chain or profit problems. With project timelines condensing, teams being BCG/ DV mashups, and project leadership sometimes unclear, learning and development opportunities are limited. Unlike BCG, DV has no formal training sessions. You are immediately staffed and expected to perform a specific role. As an SD, you schedule, execute and analyze interviews with consumers. Many times a BCG or DV partner will cherry-pick which research supports his/ her hypotheses about what a client should invest in and ignore anything that disconfirms these hypotheses. While this isn't inherently bad, it does result in a feeling that the research you've performed is not valuable or necessary. Unlike BCG partners, DV partners have minimal management, industry, or leadership training. Most have some startup background. Most come from failed startups (otherwise, they'd be retired or still at their startups). DV leadership can be inappropriate, and there have been several accusations of harassment. It is common to attend hour-and-a-half meetings where leadership serves alcohol and then mocks DV's work or veers off on self-serving rants about non-relevant issues. With >50 employees, hour-and-a-half meetings to listen to partner rants are quite expensive. Though DV pay is lower than what other firms are offering, partners frequently reward teams with alcohol-fueled outings. It's not uncommon to see directors or partners pouring liquor into associates' mouths during karaoke sessions. If this is your idea of a bonus, this may be a good fit for you; if not, find better pay elsewhere. Many people come to DV because they want to learn how to build businesses, but this is not DV's mission any longer. DV's mission is to support BCG in any way possible to remain funded and relevant to BCG's business model. Though a BCG stamp on your resume may open career opportunities in the future, DV is not worth the time or frustration.
