Google Bad Review 1: Whilst Mears had our family member, we asked if we could have a copy of her fingerprint. This is something the previous funeral directors had done willingly for us and with out charge. Mears wanted £20 to email a copy over. We paid for it as it was important to us.
The Order of Service was another issue. We received a draft of it before the actual one went to print. They had managed to make our family member 25 years younger than she was and that she had died not only on the wrong day, but also month and year! We found this quite bizarre as family had, had meetings with Mears and given them all the correct dates. Obviously, we informed them of the errors. When we arrived at the crematorium and saw the finished Order of Service we were gob smacked that yet again the date of death was incorrect, they hadn’t put the day she died, they had put the date of her funeral, one month after she died.
We found their overall service, to be cold and uncaring, there was zero attention to detail, and for a small chain of Family run Funeral Directors, we were very unhappy with the way our dear family member was treated and also how we the close family were treated. They came across as money orientated as apposed to being a caring family company.
We would not recommend Mears at all, they are all about money, no compassion.
You may wonder why we used them if we were so unhappy, we were executors but family, and we didn’t want to cause a bigger division in the family by going against what the surviving son wanted as he was friends with Mears. We truly wish we had gone with his Mothers wishes and taken her to be looked after by Valentines.
The celebrant was a lovely lady and told a beautiful life story of our loved one, and we can not fault her.

Google Bad Review (2): We recently “had” to use Mears Family Funerals, not because we wanted to, but because another family member had previously said to the owners (his friends) that they would use them. Our family member who passed away in February had stated she wanted to use an alternative funeral director, as we had used them last year and they were amazing. Unfortunately, her request was not listened to by the other family member.
All that aside our experience with Mears wasn’t the greatest!!
We were told firstly we couldn’t visit until the day before the funeral, as they don’t hold the people that have passed on site in their establishment, they were in fact held down the road in a storage warehouse by Biggin Hill airport and would have to be transported back to Mears Shop in Biggin Hill, we were shocked that the whole reason the other family member wanted to use his said friends business was because he wanted her to go to someone he knew!!! How ridiculous because as it turns out she wasn’t with the friends at all, she was in a storage warehouse!!
We had advised Mears that we were awaiting cheques from the life insurance to arrive to pay the balance. Unfortunately, the first cheques that were sent would have been cleared and paid to Mears in plenty of time, had the insurance company spelt the name of the executor correctly. So, this put us behind schedule of the final balance being paid one week before the cremation. We kept in touch with Mears explaining this several times. The cheques finally arrived and were set to clear on the day of the funeral, which again we informed Mears of. However, the day before the funeral Mears rang us late afternoon, demanding the funeral balance, saying that a contract had been signed agreeing to payment being made one week prior to funeral. This phone call was very upsetting as we had kept them informed the whole way, we had already paid over half of the balance and through no fault of our own an error had been made by Royal London, for which we were having to await newly printed cheques.
Lucy a member of staff at Mears made 3 phone calls and 3 emails, demanding the money, even though we had kept Mears in touch informing them of the cheque situation. Lucy had each time replied to us “thanks for letting us know”, and then emailing a separate email asking for the money!
The balance was paid to Mears first thing in the morning before our family member was placed in the hearse. Not one jot of compassion or understanding from Mears, just the “where’s our money!” just what you need more stress and pressure when going through such a sad and stressful time anyway, after losing a close family member.

Google Good Review: My sister and I used Mears in Biggin Hill for the funeral of both our parents, as we had a joint funeral. Lucy was very professional and knowledgeable, and nothing was too much trouble. Lucy helped us to arrange a beautiful funeral for both of them, and James the celebrant who conducted the service included everything we wanted, to recall their lives together, and all the memories.
