Google Reviewer 1, Name (Bad Review): Clarisa Punla
Google Bad Review 1: I tried contacting YHA London Central via Expedia to change my reservation dates TWICE. I did not receive answers and I was aware of the cancelation change policies. I did not want to pay extra fees so I contacted YHA London directly through e-mail to which I attached screenshots to all my attempts to change my reservation. I got into contact with Caroline who I expressed my issues to (to change the reservation date) and she told me, “We would like to offer the option to modify your booking on your Expedia account without any charges that would be incurred outside the cancellation and amendment period. Please let us know when you manage to do this.” To which I notified her that I could not make those changes because I kept getting directed to contact the hostel. I did not get an answer from Caroline and followed up THREE times. Because Caroline knew the changes I wanted to make and I followed up with her as directed, I appeared at the hostel on the date I wanted to change my reservation to. I was told the hostel was booked and that I was marked as a no show – even though I was in contact with someone who knew I wanted to change my reservation. I did not stay at YHA Central London or any of their other branches in the area and expressed that I would like a refund to which I was told I would be helped. I forwarded all my emails to the same email I was initially contacting, but specifically to Chiara, who was the one who helped me in person. After following up a few times after no responses, she told me, “I just have a conversation with Expedia regarding your booking issue. They checked their references and since the issue has been caused by their system you could get in touch with Expedia Customer Service in order to verify and process a refund. Please, feel free to call them at any time to this phone number: —— At this stage I just can forward your request to Expedia and they would be able to support you.” So I got into contact with Expedia through phone call and was basically told that they could not do anything because I was in contact with the hostel and that it was not on their end. They were essentially in a back and forth about who is responsible for the charge. I feel like I was lied to when Chiara said she had a conversation with Expedia.
Further, I got into contact with Expedia again via Twitter and they told me that YHA was, in fact, responsible for the charge – I reserved with a pay at the counter method so Expedia did not collect anything from me. Expedia customer service (both over the phone and Twitter) also contacted the hostel themselves to address the issue. I contacted the hostel again via email explaining all of this and asking for an explanation as to why they denied my request for a refund and why they were claiming that it was Expedia's responsibility. They responded quite immediately saying that my refund had been approved and that Expedia would get in touch with me since they would be the ones processing the refund. When I asked for their Expedia contact so I could contact them directly, radio silence once again. In total, I've had to follow up with YHA over 15 times due to their lack of communication.
I was very much in the dark about who was responsible for my refund – at quick glance, my bank statement recorded it as Expedia, but in full detail (as I have taken this issue further) I have full receipt of the charge being taken by YHA. I have screenshots and emails to back this issue. Since being promised a refund, I've followed up with YHA three times and no response.

Google Bad Review (2): Honestly don't know how this hostel maintains a 4.3 star rating.
Had a terrible experience at YHA, first arrival (after 30hrs of flying) staff took 2hrs to allocate me a room i had booked months in advance, because every dorm they'd send me to was already full.
I originally booked and paid for a quad share room, however my ‘upgraded' room was a six share (the only upgrade about the room was that it had a toilet and shower included). The room itself was very run down, the bathroom walls were so moldy that they had nailed a slab of plywood over the top in an attempt to cover it. The one cushion in the room was covered in questionable stains – along with all the couches and seats in the shared facilities, just covered in marks, super old and gross. Only ONE power point in the whole room worked, and wifi was only accessible at the bar/front desk on the ground floor.
My room mates were a bunch of students who were staying there repeatedly until they found permanent residency. None of them showered or practiced basic hygiene so the room absolutely REEKED of body odor. The one window in the room only opened about 3 inches wide, so there was little to no ventilation. Outdoor temperature was about 10 degrees, yet inside the room felt like 30 degrees. I'm 5 foot 10, and could not fit in the beds without my feet going over the metal bars surrounding the bed. I went on a cheap contiki directly after my stay at YHA and can easily say even their super basic shared camping accommodation was far more comfortable than this hostel.
For a youth hostel, I didn't encounter much youth at all – 95% of guests are old people and parents with small children taking advantage of the cheap accommodation. I would not recommend this hostel for people in their early to mid 20s, there are far more fun and just overall better hostels around London.
The staff were quite inexperienced, particularly a young male that wore glasses. He was evidently new to his role but was very rude and misleading to me whenever I had a basic question or during check out. I've worked in hospitality for 10 years and work front desk for a hotel currently so i can sympathize for staff to some degree, regardless you should know how to check someone out correctly (and politely) especially if they clearly haven't enjoyed their stay.
The only positive thing I can say about this hostel is the location – very central to oxford circus, trains and situated in a safe quiet area.
If you're in your early 20's and new to staying in hostels look elsewhere or you'll find out the hard way like i unfortunately did.
