Google Bad Review: Renter beware – what you will get with this house/B&B is a place in serious disrepair with old and dirty fixings, and will have to deal with seemingly cordial people (Marie and Rupert), but who clearly scrimp at every turn and will be churlish in the extreme when it comes to taking and keeping your money
We rented the Barnes B&B in its entirety for a full month in the summer, at a cost significantly above the rate for booking all the individual rooms over for the same period (and this without breakfast or on-site proprietors). In addition, a deposit was also required. As we live overseas, we were unable to inspect the property beforehand, though as it operated as a B&B, we believed it would kept to a decent standard and took a chance.
On arrival, there was only time for the proprietors to show us where the rooms were before they left and we took possession in good faith. Though the house was stated as having been cleaned, what we found was an old house kept to a minimal state of repair. As this was the proprietors first rental and had been organised at short notice, we did not make a fuss and decided to make do. A decision we’ve come to hugely regret.
The smallest room – where our toddler had to sleep – had a dirty sock under the rug which clearly showed the house had not been properly cleaned. Worse, the radiator was falling off the wall, taking the masonry with it. The unhinged radiator had exposed nails which we had to cover up to ensure our son’s safety.
Every window frame in every bedroom had ingrained dirt. None of the windows opened smoothly – they no longer fit properly against the runners and so needed hard guiding to lift and fall, always with a risk of breakage
The state of the plumbing was such that there was very low water pressure, and whenever anyone used hot water, the pipes made a loud noise that could be heard throughout the house. The master bedroom has an en-suite, but that requires a ladder-step down to access, and obviously hazardous at night.
There are many other points we could raise, and to add but a few:
(1) The recycling bin for food had also not been cleaned. It had the weekend’s vegetables and gravy in it and was already turning rancid. As it was extremely hot, we had no choice but to clean this disgusting mess out ourselves.
(2) The few pots and pans we used needed to be scrubbed by us before use, but most of the older ones could not be used due to disrepair. The cutlery had bits of food still stuck to them and had to be washed before use.
(3) Every single lamp was missing the bolt that would fix the lampshade to the frame. Consequently, the lampshades were balancing on the lightbulb and the slightest nudge would make them fall off
(4) Bizarrely, the kitchen floor has been laid with a type of wood that cannot allow water on it. Every time there was a splash of water from cooking/cleaning, etc., a special cleaner had to be applied.
(5) On leaving, the proprietor asked which beds had been slept in, as they only intended to change the sheets on those we said had been used. This showed again their attitude to cleanliness.
In terms of location, be aware that this is directly under the Heathrow flightpath and the sound of the planes landing will wake you at 4.45am each day. In addition, residents-only parking is extremely onerous on the street with often no spaces available.
On departure, we arranged for the same company the proprietors used to clean the house to also do the end of tenancy clean. Even after this clean, the proprietors are now withholding half the deposit for what they say is a small stain on the carpet in the small bedroom (also claiming it is a new carpet when it absolutely was not).
Despite having paid massively above market for the house, and having been delivered a dirty house in disrepair, the proprietors have the gall to try to extract even more money out of us. We are very angry and disappointed and felt we must warn others of what to expect from this property.
