FB Last Post Text: How much caffeine is too much? Caffeine is a substance that most of us consume on a daily basis and for many people it is a key part of their morning (and mid morning, and afternoon!) routine. We all know that too much caffeine isn’t great for us, but what are the benefits, how much caffeine is too much and why? Caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system which blocks a chemical in our cells that is responsible for making you feel sleepy, so that you feel more awake… and energetic. When we ingest caffeine, it is absorbed into the bloodstream, with the blood levels peaking after around 30–120 minutes. After this, caffeine levels will remain high for 3–4 hours and then start to drop off, but it can stay in the system for over 10 hours. Therefore, when we have too much caffeine in our system, it can disrupt our body’s regular energy levels. Alongside greater alertness, there are a number of proven benefits to moderate intakes of caffeine, including a reduced risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s; greater cognitive function; improved liver and heart function; reduced risk of depression and improved athletic performance. When it comes to athletic performance, and in particular – weight training, moderate caffeine intake prior to working out has been shown to lead to greater endurance and decreased perceived exertion levels so that people are able to train harder, heavier and for longer periods. It also increases your metabolism, meaning more fat may be burned. So what does moderate mean? Research has found that a maximum of 400mg of caffeine per day is safe to consume, whilst the optimum amount of caffeine in the diet is a single dose of around 100-200mg. Some examples of around 100mg of caffeine: – 1 cup of filter Instant Coffee – 2 Diet Coke – 1 Red Bull – 2 breakfast teas – 3 green teas – 120g Dark Chocolate Too much caffeine can lead to withdrawal symptoms and is linked to increased anxiety, difficulty sleeping, headaches and dizziness, dehydration and irregular heart rhythms. It’s therefore important to try to limit how much caffeine is in your diet and to think sensibly about the timing of consumption. Ideally stick to the mornings so that your sleep isn’t negatively affected and if you’re training early in the day, a coffee 30 minutes before you work out is ideal to significantly improve exercise performance, focus, and fat burning!
