Google Bad Review:  I saw great reviews and contacted them about a job to install drip edge on some guttering and some new flashing to a section of our Victorian house/slate roof.

They wanted £150 +VAT for the site visit in order to quote, saying it would be deducted from work carried out. When I politely asked for some idea of their rates for labour, they ghosted me completely.

So essentially, they expected me to pay out £150 +VAT without having any insight into what the job might end up costing, even when extensive details about the job were shared. They should probably ask themselves if they'd accept this behaviour from a contractor that they'd engage for work on their own houses.

Not one other contractor tried to extort money out of us for a site visit, and we ended up using a different company who did everything we asked at a very fair price.

Google Bad Review (2):  BARL won’t come out to give a quote unless you pay the £180.00 fee for this service upfront. They trade off some very good reviews so I thought the cost could be worth it. The owner of BARL said I needed a brand new roof, somehow he was able to see this from ground level and without inspecting the attic space where there is easy access, the visit was 15 minutes. The A4 templated quote sent subsequently quoted £3,000 for scaffolding and in excess of £39,000 for the roof (this is a Victorian terraced property). They wouldn’t entertain any alternative to a new roof.

I got the work done in the end to a very high standard by a different roofing company, they said there was nothing wrong with the existing roof. I am so pleased with their work and it cost me 1/5th of the quote from BARL. Even the scaffolding was a fraction of the price at £800.

BARL have written below their standard response to this review. They say I offered close to 50% reduction when this simply isn't true. And Covid should not have stopped them from inspecting the roof space instead of making an inaccurate judgment from the ground, that is simply unprofessional.
