Google Bad Review 1: Under the stewardship of Mrs Canham, Gatehouse School was a genuinely special place for children with a certain quirkiness that is rarely found in schools and impossible to replicate.
When Mrs Canham decided to leave in 2014 after 9 outstanding years the baton was passed on to Mr Francis. In fairness he had an uphill struggle to fill void left by Mrs Canham’s departure. Unfortunately, as hard as he tried, a lack of experience meant he wasn’t quite able to meet the expectations of his staff, the Board or those finicky parents. His tenure was a mere 3 years.
The search for a new head started in earnest. It was important to find someone who could bring the disillusioned staff together and placate the evermore demanding parents. Mr Noakes was the chosen person. His credentials on paper were impressive having been the head of Forest School’s Preparatory School. The truth though was carefully veiled. An affair at Forest meant he had to be distanced from Forest and placed elsewhere. A quick glance at the list Governors at Gatehouse reveals a link to Forest. It might just be a coincidence but the Chair of the Board of Governors was a former Head at Forest Girls School. She has since stepped down. The balloon of hope that Mr Noakes would unite staff at the school and deal with parents burst soon after he joined. Rather than win over the staff, the environment became more fractious. The school’s relationship with parents took a further backward step.
Unfortunately, the magic Gatehouse once had has been lost and is now a distant memory. Staff are leaving in their droves and parents are frantically calling other schools looking for places for their darling children. The long waiting list to get into the school has shrivelled just as a small fortune has been spent to expand the school. As a further blow to the school after just 2 terms as Head, Mr Noakes himself has decided to pursue the fortunes being offered in the Middle East. It’s such a shame to live through the school’s demise. Hopefully a new Head will be the start of a new era at Gatehouse.

However, hand on heart, can you genuinely say you didn't send such a note to the Board of Governors? I appreciate you sent it as a parent and not as a GPA member but you did try to instigate a rebellion via social media by encouraging others to send a similar letter to the Board…

Google Good Review: We love the Gatehouse School. We have a daughter in year 1 and she has been with the school since Nursery. The head teacher is amazingly experienced and dedicated. All the teachers we have met have been really kind, experienced, hard working and loving. My daughter also said “the teachers make learning fun”. We can see our daughter thrive, happy and grow confidently over the years. The school has handled COVID exceptionally well, we could not have hoped for a better school. What is really helpful for working parents like us is the wrap around care, such as holiday clubs, after school clubs…. Particularly, we greatly appreciate the holiday clubs, like the month long one in the summer, as it solved our biggest challenge of school holiday childcare especially impacted by COVID. Would highly recommend the school!
